ABOUT THE AVIARY

THE AVIARY IS AN OPEN STUDIO SPACE DEDICATED
TO SUPPORTING INDEPENDENT CREATIVES.

NOW TAKING MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS

The Aviary is about creating an open studio dedicated to supporting creatives who work independently, yet still want to feel part of a creative community and work in an inspiring environment.

We are membership based, from full time to daily drop-in, in order to allow flexible work schedules. It has all the amenities that a design studio would have - a design library, a private meeting room, a social lounge, and pin up space.

The Aviary will promote design and architecture through our storefront windows and host design events that are open to our members and the public.

FOUNDERS

Andrea and Stella are the co-founders of The Aviary. They met at architecture school in 2003 and share a common dream of working in a collaborative environment that fosters critical and creative thinking.

ANDREA MCLEAN

+ MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE, UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, 2008
+ BACHELOR OF INTERIOR DESIGN, KWANTLEN POLYTECHNICAL UNIVERSITY, 1994

Andrea has 20 years of architectural, interior design, and project management experience. Andrea started her own design practice, Andrea Mclean Design Office, in 1999. She has also worked at Evoke International Design, 2004-2011, and Ledingham Design Consultants in 1998.

Andrea’s travels in developing countries provided the foundation for her architectural thesis, community architecture: native housing in Bella Coola, for which she received the Abraham Rogatnik book prize. This distinction is given to projects that exhibit creative and poetic talent in a design that also enriches the environment and inspires the spiritual lives of the people using that environment.

Andrea’s interest in design started when she studied architectural drafting when she was 13. Andrea is preoccupied with details, materials, and thoughtful space planning. She prides herself on the quality of her drawings and project organization.

Andrea currently lives in East Vancouver with her husband, and two daughters.

STELLA CHEUNG BOYLAND

+ MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE, UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, 2008
+ BACHELOR OF APPLIED SCIENCE, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO, 1998

Stella has over 10 years of local engineering and architectural experience. As an engineer, Stella worked both in the public and private sector on transportation and civil infrastructural design and urban master planning. Upon graduating from UBC’s School of Architecture, she joined Busby Perkins + Will, a leading design practice with a sustainable design focus, where she was involved in large scale LEED certified mixed-use residential and commercial projects.

Having moved from Hong Kong to Vancouver in her early teens, she carries with her a love for intense urban spaces while being surrounded daily by one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth. Asia paved the way for her interests in messy and complex city-making while Canada has instilled in her a sense of reverence for nature. She believes that it is only through a genuine respect for nature that compelling and relevant design can happen.

Her current focus is on establishing a creative practice of her own and The Aviary will be her venue to create and explore design issues close to her heart.

Stella lives in a small old house surrounded by big old trees with her husband and their little boy.
