BFF is a joint coordination between Kristin Cheung and The Aviary as a means to engage with our community through art. Join us this Saturday August 13th for a neighbourhood communal drawing party connecting friends, local businesses and residents together with delightful snacks and refreshments here at The Aviary. Come and draw what The Fraserhood / Fraser Street neighborhood means to you. Your drawings may be selected to be part of small-run print publication that will be available after the event.
Fraser Street has always played an important role in connecting the city together from its origins linking New Westminster, Burrard Inlet and the Fraser River. The Fraser River was an important source of food for aboriginals for generations. In 1875, Kingsway was established as a “wagon road” to connect the Fraser River to False Creek. By connecting the city, residents were able to access fresh fruits and dairy plants for their neighbors and families -- building a richer community.
Kristin Cheung is passionate about using art as a tool to build a community of creative friends and eventually — making new best friends. Kristin has received a small grant from the Vancouver Neighbourhood Small Grants program to help put this event together. Kristin held a very successful 24 hour drawing party in Chinatown in 2013, and again in Strathcona in 2015. This year she brings her passion and focus to the emerging Fraserhood.
The Aviary is a co-working studio for designers and creatives, located in the heart of The Fraserhood on East 15th. We are purposefully located on street level with large storefront windows to encourage interaction between designers and the public. We hope this event will not only bring our neighbourhood together, but also create an interesting cross section of drawings that will shed light on our unique Vancouver community.
